Meteorite lights up sky in Australia as it falls to earth

A meteorite that from the sky in Central Australia was filmed by police CCTV cameras.

The giant space rock can be seen shooting across the skyline, near Alice Springs just after midnight on Monday.

The night sky lit up in a bright blue glow, followed quickly by a dashing white light as the meteorite hit the ground.

Members of the public in the Northern Territory had called the police reporting the flash and noise and officers in the area later discovered their CCTV cameras had filmed the incident.

Officers were dubious of the initial reports from the public, Superintendent James O’Brien told ABC News, "but then we started looking around our CCTV and the one in Tennant Creek sees this beautiful purple light coming down.”

The security footage captured the meteor shower scattering across the sky near Alice Springs. It is not known where the meteorite landed.
