Metro passengers faced delays after a sleeping passenger became disruptive after being woken by staff.

Police were called to a Metro train at Gateshead Interchange at around 6.45am on Friday due to a disruptive man onboard one of the carriages. The incident resulted in passengers facing delays and a reduced service.

Nexus bosses said the man left the area before police arrived on the scene.

A Nexus spokesperson said: "Police were called to a Metro train at Gateshead Interchange at 6.45am this morning due to a disruptive man on board the carriage. The individual left the station before officers arrived and the train continued its journey."

Soon after, the Tyne and Wear Metro account posted this on X: "We have gaps in service on the Green Line between Regent Centre and Airport in both directions due to an earlier anti social customer on a train at Gateshead."

However, the service caught up, with the Tyne and Wear Metro account sharing this positive update on X: "We are operating a frequent service to all destinations. For the latest train arrival times, and service updates please consult the Pop app."
