Metroland won't return to MetroCentre in 2026 as reopening 'announcement' turns out to be fake

Dreams of seeing Metroland re-open in Metrocentre looked set to become a reality this week when word of a 2026 return circulated on social media.

The iconic indoor theme park, which opened the Gateshead shopping centre in 1988, holds many fond memories for people across the North East and beyond, who spent hours of fun on rides. A single wristband entitled the visitor to unlimited rides on the theme park's attractions, including the rollercoaster, pirate ship, swings and Ferris wheel.

So, when a post appeared on Facebook announcing that it would return in spring 2026 with new rides and a jungle-themed cafe, people were understandably excited. The post originated from a Facebook page claiming to be 'Metroland MetroCentre', which had gained over 1,000 likes within four hours of being created.

Within hours of the post being created, hundreds of people had shared the announcement and tagged their friends and family in the post. A 'competition' was also running alongside the post claiming that winners would enjoy a range of benefits, including free entry.

Those who had spent their childhood enjoying trips to Metroland were thrilled by the thought of taking their own children to the site, which was located in the Yellow Mall before closing in 2008.

But it didn't take long for people to realise that the news was fake and the Facebook page has now been removed.

The post circulating on social media read: "Exciting news is coming to the Metrocentre Gateshead in spring of 2026, Metroland is coming back!

"New and improved with more rollercoasters more amusements and more FUN, Metroland will be the biggest uk indoor amusement park, visitors will be sure to come from far and wide to visit this spectacular attraction, we will also be having a opening day with lots of giveaways/ free food and snacks and a free performance from a special guest!

"Within our new auditorium, you will spot our regular visitors like the MetroGnomes there to accompany you to all the rides and shows! Not a day to be missed!

"Opening day will be announced this summer and will be free admission to all for a three day spectacular event!"

MetroCentre was contacted for a comment.
