Mexico: Volcano Popocatepetl Spews Out Ash

A volcano in Mexico has been spewing clouds of ash high into the sky.

Popocatepetl - the word means smoking mountain in ancient Mayan - lies about 40 miles southeast of Mexico City.

The explosion of gas and ash was seen for miles because of the clear blue skies.

The volcano is one of the most active in Mexico - its last major eruption occurred in 1947.

Scientists first noted increasing activity early last year.

It started showing renewed movement early last month, with a tremor that lasted more than three hours.
