Michael Barrymore is set to make a return to ITV, 16 years after he was axed by the channel.

The TV presenter and comic will make his ITV comeback over Easter, returning to feature in a documentary about former colleague and friend, the late, great Larry Grayson.

The one-off programme will air on ITV3, as Barrymore and other big names reflect on Grayson's life and comedy career – including Barrymore's time as a warm-up act for The Generation Game.

The special will be one of Barrymore's first appearances on ITV since 2002, when he was dropped from the channel following the tragic death of Stuart Lubbock at his home.

At the height of his career, Michael presided over some of ITV's biggest family entertainment shows across the '80s and '90s, including Strike It Lucky, My Kind of People, My Kind of Music and Kids Say the Funniest Things.

The presenter's TV career ended abruptly after allegations about his personal life surfaced during an inquest into the death of Lubbock.

Last year, a High Court judge awarded Barrymore "more than nominal damages" from Essex Police after finding that they had wrongfully arrested him during the course of the investigation.

Barrymore was detained 11 years ago on suspicion of the rape and murder of Lubbock, whose body was found in the swimming pool of Barrymore's home in Essex.

Essex Police have since admitted that the TV host was arrested unlawfully and failed to prove that he "could and would have been arrested lawfully", according to the High Court judge.

Larry Grayson: Shut That Door! will air on ITV3 on April 1 at 9pm.
