At his peak Michael, who was famed for hosting primetime shows such as Strike It Lucky and My Kind of Music, was widely considered one of the most popular performers in the UK – but his career floundered after the discovery of a man’s body in his swimming pool in 2001.

The TV presenter was arrested in connection with the death, but never charged, and is now reportedly suing police for £2.5 million in damages, mainly as compensation for his loss of earnings after being dropped by ITV during this troublesome time.

However, after several years off-screen, Michael has just announced his return to the small screen.

The news came to light after the 64-year-old star was spotted in a photograph on set with Tom, shared by production company Antenna, alongside the caption: “Great shoot today with two very talented actors.”

Michael then confirmed his upcoming telly appearance, writing on Twitter: “Brilliant second day filming with Tom Brooke. Never mentioned ‘Game of Thrones’ once… class act, an a really nice guy. I’m knackered! Ha X.”

When his followers pressed for details about the project, he simply replied: “New sit com (sic).”

He then added: “The production company filming it put that picture on of us on set. I can’t say, just yet. Still a lot to film. If you liked Bob Martin, this one will be right up your street.”

Bob Martin was a sitcom that ran between 2000-2001 and saw Michael playing the title role of a troubled daytime television game-show host.

When one fan asked if this new show marked his official comeback, Michael, who appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2006, responded: “I suppose that’s what it’s called…”
