Michael Caine voted for Brexit because 'it was about freedom'

Sir Michael Caine has said that he voted for Brexit in the EU referendum, because he’d rather be a ‘poor master than a rich servant’.

The veteran actor made the remarks during an interview with Sky News.

“It wasn’t about the racism, immigrants or anything, it was about freedom,” he said. “What it is with me, I’d rather be a poor master than a rich servant.”

“Politics is always chaotic,” he went on to say.

“In politics you’re always going into areas you’ve never been before, so you’re always going to get lost and then you’re going to find your way, and then it’ll be alright.”

Caine, who has a personal fortune thought to be worth £60 million, has previously made his views on Brexit known.

During an interview with on Radio 4’s Today Programme last year, he admitted that while the prospect was ‘scary’, it was preferable to ‘being dictated to by thousands of faceless civil servants’.

“I sort of feel certain we should come out,” he said.

“You’ve now got in Europe a sort of government by proxy of everybody who has now got carried away and I think unless there’s some extremely significant changes we should get out.

“You cannot be dictated to by thousands of faceless civil servants who make these rules and you sort of, ‘oh hang on a minute is that right’ and they argue about financially but, we buy more than them than we sell to them.”
