Renowned US actor Michael Douglas has expressed his pride at his son Cameron Douglas' progress after years of battling drug addiction.

Cameron, 40, struggled with cocaine and heroin addictions and spent time in prison for drug related offences before his recovery, which he details in his memoir Long Way Home.

“He’s doing great, he’s in wonderful shape," Michael, 75, said on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show. "I’m just so proud. He’s had a rough go of it. Addiction is just a terrible terrible disease. It affects all families.

Michael, who shares Cameron with first wife Diandra Luker, recently revealed he thought he would lose his son to addiction as Cameron shot up cocaine almost daily and suffered drug-induced seizures.

He said: “There were moments when hope dwindled… and then it’s just a train out of the station. Life became a series of crises. I thought I was going to lose him."

Cameron was sentenced to five years behind bars in 2009 for conspiracy to distribute meth and cocaine. He ultimately ended up serving eight years after his sentence was extended for possession while incarcerated.

He's also working on reviving his acting career, having previously starred in films such as Mr. Nice Guy and National Lampoon's Adam & Eve.
