Yahoo News Michael Jackson Doc ‘Leaving Neverland’ Added To Sundance Lineup
Two weeks ahead of its kick-off, Sundance Film Festival has released the final round of titles with the addition of documentaries Leaving Neverland and The Brink, each set to world premiere in Park City, Utah.
Directed and produced by Dan Reed, Leaving Neverland follows the long-standing accusation of sexual abuse by the crowned King of Pop, Michael Jackson. At the height of his stardom, Jackson began long-running relationships with two boys, aged 7 and 10, and their families. Now in their 30s, they tell the story of how they were sexually abused by Jackson, and how they came to terms with it years later.
Leaving Neverland will screen in the special events category.
Debuting in the documentary premieres section, The Brink, directed by Alison Klayman and Produced by Marie Therese Guirgis) centers on ex advisor to President Donald Trump, Steve Bannon. Now unconstrained by an official White House post, Bannon is free to peddle influence as a perceived kingmaker with a direct line to the President. After anointing himself leader of the “populist movement,” he travels around the U.S. and the world spreading his hard-line anti-immigration message.
Variety just announced that The Brink was picked up by Magnolia Pictures.
These two documentaries add to the total of 241 projects, which will screen at the 2019 festival which will run January 24-February 4.
Side note: A representative of the often litigious Jackson estate contacted Deadline to call Leaving Neverland “just another rehash of dated and discredited allegations” against the Thriller singer.
