Michael Mosley missing on Greek island as extensive search launched for TV doctor

Popular health expert Dr Michael Mosley has been reported missing while on a Greek island.

The last sighting of the presenter, who appears on This Morning and BBC Sounds Just One Thing, was on the island of Symi, sparking concerns for his safety.

Local social media updates have indicated that search and rescue teams from Athens are en route to the Dodecanese island, with officials yet to find any trace of the 67-year-old.

It is understood Dr Mosley's wife, Dr Clare Bailey, 62, had alerted the emergency services after he vanished on a coastal walk on Wednesday in the area of St Nicholas Beach and didn't return home by 7.30pm.

His representatives have spoken to the Mirror, expressing their deep concern during this distressing time, confirming that the search efforts continue.

Greek police spokesperson Constantina Dimoglidou reported that searches commenced early in the morning but have so far been fruitless.

The statement said: "He was at the beach of Ag. Nikolas with another couple when he decided to go back to his home in the area of Pedi of Symi. It was around 1.30pm and he forgot his phone at the beach. Any and every attempt to track him down has not produced any result."

Dimoglidou further explained the breadth of the search, stating: "We have now asked the fire brigade to assist in the operation in the case that he may have slipped, tripped, fallen, even bitten by a snake, remaining injured somewhere. There is just no trace of him. None whatsoever and that means that for us at least, every potential scenario is open and being investigated."

Dr Mosley's wife, Claire, is said to have raised the alarm when he didn't return six hours after leaving for his hike earlier this week. Police are leading the investigation and believe he is missing on land, however the coastguard is thought to be helping with the search.

A community Facebook group on Symi has also issued an appeal for people who may have seen the presenter. They appealed for information in a post that included a picture of Dr Mosley wearing a pair of shorts, a blue polo shirt, baseball cap and sunglasses. They wrote: "Have you seen this man? He set off to walk back from St Nick's at about 13.30 and failed to make it home.

"His friends are concerned as it is 6 hours since they last saw him. His name is Dr Mike Mosley and he is a familiar face for many British people as he has appeared on the BBC."

The post added: "The police and coast guard have been informed EMAK, the island's rescue team, is also involved." Members of the group have shared their hopes that the presenter will be found safe and well.

The TV doctor was on Symi with his wife as they completed their joint "Eat well, sleep better, live longer" nationwide tour.

Dr Mosley is the author of the international bestselling books The Fast 800, The Clever Guts Diet, The Fast Diet, Fast Exercise, Just One Thing and The 8-Week Blood Sugar Diet.

He presents a regular Radio show and Podcast for the BBC called Just One Thing and lives in Buckinghamshire with wife Claire.
