When it comes to scoring goals in the Premier League, Michael Owen and Jermaine Defoe are reputable individuals. So, their amazement when witnessing Darwin Nunez curl Liverpool's third in against Bournemouth speaks volumes.

Arne Slot's side returned to winning ways in domestic action with a comfortable win against Bournemouth. An early assist from VAR saw the visitors correctly denied a goal for offside, then Liverpool turned up the heat for the Anfield crowd.

First Luis Diaz bagged himself a brace, taking his tally to five Premier League goals in as many games, then Nunez - making his first start under the club's new head coach - took matters into his own hands when he collected to ball on the right flank, cut onto his left foot and curled in past Kepa Arrizabalaga with help from the post.

Speaking with Premier League Productions at half-time, former Reds striker Owen - who netted 150 career top-flight goals, 118 of which were for the club - commented: "Absolute sublime, I like that. What a finish."

Defoe, himself the scorer of 162 Premier League goals to sit ninth on the all-time list, added: "It’s an unbelievable finish. That too on his weak foot."

The moment was an emotional one for the Uruguayan, who without an opportunity under Slot before Saturday afternoon was already a topic of debate for supporters. He has spent two seasons on Merseyside, scoring 15 in his first year before adding 18 last term, but was not a starter in Jurgen Klopp's plans for his final month in charge.

This, partnered with Slot's choice to field Diogo Jota in the opening weeks of the campaign, called into question the 25-year-old's capabilities to be the starting No.9 in Slot's plans in the long run or whether a new striker would be better suited and sought after in future windows.

"I think he's a bit of a confidence player, I think he needs to be loved," Owen continued. "The fans absolutely love him at Anfield, he's a cult hero in many ways and he does the unexpected, as we saw with that goal.

"He can miss a couple of easy chances, but give him a hard chance and he tends to take it. Quite a strange type of player from that point of view, but there was no denying that quality of that goal."
