Michael Sheen is nearly unrecognisable in the first look at his new ITV show Quiz.

In fact, he looks much more like someone else you might recognise – former Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? presenter Chris Tarrant, perhaps? That's very much by design.

Sheen will be portraying the game show host in a new three-part drama about the cough scandal that rocked Millionaire all the way back in 2001. Check out a sneak peek:

The first-look photo depicts Sheen as Tarrant smiling wide on his way to give evidence against Charles and Diana Ingram, who were alleged to have conspired with accomplice Tecwen Whittock to rig a round of the ITV competition show.

Whittock was seated in the audience along with Diana Ingram while Charles was a contestant and was alleged to have coughed as a signal when a correct quiz answer was read out by Chris Tarrant.

The media scandal and subsequent trial was adapted into a stage production by Brexit: The Uncivil War playwright James Graham, who is now adapting it for TV with The Queen director Stephen Frears.

Along with Sheen as Tarrant, Spooks' Matthew Macfadyen and Fleabag's Sian Clifford will play Charles and Diana Ingram while Peaky Blinders' Helen McCrory has been cast as Sonia Woodley QC.

"I am delighted to be bringing James Graham's wonderful play Quiz to screen on ITV," ITV's head of drama Poppy Hill recently said.

"It's testament to James' brilliant scripts that Stephen Frears is directing, which together with Left Bank Pictures producing, promises to deliver a very special drama. It's an extraordinary and thoroughly British story and is going to be a real treat for our audience."

Quiz arrives on ITV in the UK and AMC in the US next year.
