Michelle Collins has confessed she and her new husband never thought they'd get married, after tying the knot in an emotional ceremony.

The 60-year-old star of EastEnders and Coronation Street exchanged wedding vows with 39-year-old partner Michael Davidson at Islington Town Hall in London on 8 August after 10 years of dating.

Collins told OK! magazine: “My mum [Mary] had passed away [last year], my daughter [Maia] was away. It was an incredibly emotional day because I kind of never thought I would actually get married and Michael didn’t really want to get married.

“It was very emotional because, as Michael said in his speech, we’ve lost a lot of people and there were a lot of people who couldn’t be there.”

The soap star - who competed in Celebrity MasterChef last year - wore a white trouser suit and a wreath of white flowers in her hair. Davidson wore a white blazer with black t-shirt and trousers.

They travelled to their reception at The Chapel Bar in a white convertible Volkswagen Beetle and celebrated with guests including Collins' former EastEnders co-star Adam Woodyatt. He played her husband Ian Beale in the BBC soap, in which she made her name as Cindy Beale.

Collins said: "I’m close to Adam, I’ve known him for a long time and we’ve grown up together."

Other celebrity guests included Gillian Taylforth, who played her mother-in-law Kathy Beale.

Collins is still grieving the death of her mother, who died last year after a two-year battle with cancer.

She revealed that pictures of her late mother were shown at the ceremony and the party.

The Corrie star said: "And we had a loop of photos and she was in a lot of them. I know she would have been really proud and she would have been proud we did it in Islington where we’re from. And The Chapel Bar … We used to go to Chapel Street market and my mum used to buy me a toy every Sunday.”

Collins has never been married before.

She has a 24-year-old daughter Maia from her relationship with Fabrizio Tassalini. They split in 1998 and he died from liver cancer in 2014.
