EastEnders favourite Michelle Fowler, played by Jenna Russell, is leaving the BBC soap.

Russell made her debut as Michelle Fowler on Christmas Eve 2016 – taking over the role from Susan Tully, who'd last appeared in 1995.

An EastEnders spokesperson confirmed that Michelle will be departing the show when her contract ends.

"Jenna is a terrific actress who has loved her time on the show playing Michelle and it was a mutual decision to write the character out," EastEnders reps told Digital Spy. "We wish Jenna all the best for the future."

Meanwhile, the soap's current boss John Yorke is concentrating on reuniting the Slater family, with Kat, Big Mo and Jean Slater all set to return.

While it's not known how Michelle will bow out from EastEnders, news of her exit comes as Kat Slater's (Jessie Wallace) return to EastEnders is set to air this week.
