Rolling Stones frontman Sir Mick Jagger paid tribute to the Royal Albert Hall in a new video celebrating the historic venue’s 150th anniversary.

The singer narrated the video tribute to live music which mixes shots of the empty hall with archive concert footage dating back to 1933 and including clips of acts from Adele and Stormzy to Iggy Pop, Coldplay and Diana Ross.

The Stones have played the hall four times including a September 1963 gig which is one of only two occasions they appeared on the same bill as the Beatles.

Footage from a 1966 concert with Ike & Tina Turner and The Yardbirds in support features in the new video directed by Tom Harper as well as Sir Mick reading from W.H. Auden’s poem For Friends Only.

Sir Mick said: “Without doubt, the Royal Albert Hall is one of the greatest concert venues in the world and so I was delighted to be asked to read a short poem by W.H. Auden as part of this excellent short film by Tom Harper.

“I have some wonderful memories of performing there with the Stones in the 1960s when once or twice it did get a bit wild, with enthusiastic fans joining us onstage and almost bringing the show to an abrupt end – but we soldiered on and had a great time.”

The Hall is currently closed for the first time since the Blitz and the film marks the start of its 150th anniversary celebrations which will extend into next year and include big name performances and showcases promoting the next generation of talent.

Harper said: “The Royal Albert Hall is a magnificent building even when it’s empty, but what makes it truly special is the connection it fosters through those shared experiences. That is what this film is about; not only a celebration of performances from the Hall’s glorious past, but also the sense of anticipation of some of the things to look forward to when we can be together again.”
