Microsoft has shown off a Windows PC the size of a tube of lipstick which can plug into any HD television and display games, apps and Microsoft Office on screen.

The ‘Stick PC’ is described as a ‘future computer’ by the Windows giant, which showed off the machine in Korea this week.

It goes on sale in May, offering either Windows 8.1 or the upcoming Windows 10 - and was demonstrated streaming TV shows to a 55-inch screen, while still updating users with emails via Microsoft Office.

It’s not confirmed when or if the gadget, manufactured by Korean company Lucom will go on sale in the West, but Google has already had considerable success with its Chromecast gadget, which plugs into the back of televisions in a similar way.

The Lucom/Microsoft ‘PC on a stick’ offers surprisingly high-end specifications for a gadget so tiny, with an Intel chip, up to 2GB of RAM and 64GB of storage (expandable to 128GB via SD card).

The gadget weighs 46g, and is just four inches long.

Microsoft Korea unveiled the gadget as part of a huge range of Windows machines - from tablets and other smart handhelds to laptops.

Microsoft’s launch was the latest addition to a product category which has been quietly expanding.

Taipei-based tech company Hannspree launched a similar PC-on-a-stick earlier this year, designed to plug into HD televisions and connect to home networks via Wi-Fi.

Hannspree’s gadget (actually called PC On a Stick) is priced at £169.

Dell also showed off a USB PC device designed to plug into the back of televisions, the Dell Cast,, aimed at business users wishing to stream media from Dell Venue Windows tablets.
