A convenience store selling multi-cuisine food has been slapped with a zero-star food hygiene rating for the second time.

Al Makkah Cash and Carry, and the adjoining Al Makkah Household on Middlesbrough's Linthorpe Road, were visited by hygiene inspectors on Wednesday, August 14. Staff were told 'urgent improvement' is necessary overall at both premises and looked at hygienic food handling, cleanliness and condition of facilities and building and management of food safety.

The stores were rated 'improvement necessary' in hygienic food handling - and 'major improvement necessary' in both cleanliness and condition of facilities, and building and management of food safety. The cash and carry prides itself on offering a full range of Asian Arabian Eastern Chinese and Afro Caribbean food.

It is not the first time Al Makkah Cash and Carry has been told to improve. In July 2022, Teesside Live reported the store was given a zero-star food hygiene rating following an inspection a month prior.

At the time, inspectors found the store required 'urgent improvement' in all three categories. The hygienic food handling, cleanliness and condition of facilities and building and the management of food safety were found to all be well below standards.

Zero is the lowest score, meaning urgent changes are required, and five is the highest. Businesses can organise a re-inspection once changes are made.

Teesside Live contacted Al Makkah for comment.
