Middlesbrough Women's game against York City Ladies on Wednesday evening was abandoned after what was described as a 'medical incident on the pitch' which saw a York player taken to hospital.

In a Women's National League Division One North clash taking place at Redcar's Green Lane, it is understood a York City Ladies player went down off the ball and needed treatment in around the 74th minute of the game. Boro Women were leading 3-0 at the time.

The player in question, was conscious on the pitch as she was stretchered off and taken to hospital where she was later discharged. A statement from York City Ladies to update on the incident, confirmed the player had left hospital.

York City Ladies wrote on Thursday: "We’d like to provide an update to supporters on the medical incident that happened at Green Lane. Midway through the second-half the game was postponed following a medical incident involving a Ladies player.

"Having been checked over by paramedics, the player was taken to hospital for further checks and has since been discharged. We’d like to wish her a speedy recovery. On behalf of everyone at the club, we’d like to thank our players and staff as well as Middlesbrough Women and Redcar Athletic staff for their support last night."

Writing on social media at the time, Middlesbrough Women posted on X (previously Twitter): "Tonight’s game against York has been abandoned. We send our best wishes to the York player involved." York City Lades, meanwhile, wrote: "This evening’s game at Green Lane has been postponed due to a medical incident on the pitch. We’ll update supporters as soon as we get a further update."

In terms of the game, a decision will now have to be made by Women's National League chiefs over whether the game is replayed or whether Boro are handed a victory.

Having narrowly missed out on promotion last season when finishing second, Mick Mulhern's side have made a strong start to the new season and went into the York game unbeaten in five, with four wins. That sees them top of the league, and the victory over York would have moved them four points clear of second-placed Cheadle Town.

Boro Women are next in action on Sunday as they host Leeds United at Stockton Town FC in the League Cup. Tickets for the game, which kicks off at 2 pm, are free for Boro season card holders and under-18s or £5 otherwise.
