Midsomer Murders is a show that is no stranger to crazy storylines and all manner of grisly deaths.

However, some fans think Sunday night's episode (May 19) may have just gifted viewers with the weirdest kill yet.

Back on screens after a midseason hiatus, the episode saw Detective Chief Inspector John Barnaby and Detective Sergeant Jamie Winter descend on a local comic book festival to investigate the death of a former supermodel, who had literally just woken from a coma she sustained in an attack two years prior (talk about bad luck).

But it was the manner of her death that most got fans talking.

While in her medical bed, the victim was descended upon by a terrifying masked figure who proceeded to wedge a rolled comic book in her mouth, thus suffocating her to death.

It was a rather grisly end, with pathologist Fleur Perkins (Annette Badland) commenting: "Our murder weapon, marinaded in saliva." It seems viewers are of the same opinion.

Below are just a few of their reactions:

"Death by comic book," noted several fans.

"That was weirdly grim," added another.

Now in its 20th run of episodes, Midsomer Murders has also been building its reputation for surprising and brilliant guest stars.

This time around, fans were treated to comedian Bill Bailey, who played the role of a discount Stan Lee/George RR Martin figure at the comic book festival.

Works for us.

Midsomer Murders continues next Sunday (May 26) on ITV.
