As well as a whodunnit, the new series of Midsomer Murders also proved a rather enjoyable game of celebrity 'Who's Who?' - and fans are delighted.

The classic series returned for its 20th run on Sunday night (March 10) and followed DCI John Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) and DS Jamie Winter (Nick Hendrix) as they investigated the mysterious death of writer Adam Osaba (Justin Pierre), who was found dead in a vat in a new brewery in Causton which just so happens to sit on the site of a famously cursed Abbey.

While reactions to the cheap-beer storyline were decidedly mixed, viewers were amazed by the star-studded ensemble.

The series opener included Angela Griffin, Elaine Page, Annette Badland and Anita Harris.

It also featured Tony Gardner (of My Parents are Aliens fame) and Anjli Mohindra (who played foiled train bomber Nadia in hit BBC series Bodyguard) - and viewers couldn't get enough of the variable ensemble.

Below are just a few of their reactions:

There was another murder before the episode's close, as the brewery's co-owner Emani Taylor (Amber Aga) also met a violent and brewery-themed end - and the murderer was revealed to be Angela Griffin's character, Jenny.

Gasp!

Until next week, folks.

Midsomer Murders continues next Sunday (March 17) on ITV.
