Midsommar and Hereditary director Ari Aster has revealed that he's bending genre expectations yet again with his next movie, as he's currently working on a "nightmare comedy".

The writer and director took part in an interview with the University of California, Santa Barbara Associated Students Program Board about his career and he dropped the exciting news that he's just finished working on a new draft for his next film.

Unfortunately he didn't have many details to share beyond that initial outline, but he did announce that "it's gonna be four hours long, [rated] over 17".

It sounds like we'll need to make sure we have a comfy seat when the movie eventually reaches cinemas...

Aster also explained that he doesn't see himself as a horror director despite the dark nature of his first two releases, saying that he would rather call himself a "genre filmmaker".

He added that he does consider Hereditary to be a horror but doesn't "even know what Midsommar is" and said that "it's not even [his] job to categorise them".

Whatever genre Aster's films fall under, he has plenty of fans who are keen to see more from him, and thankfully it sounds like the director is very keen to keep making films because he is "obsessed" with them.

"I've always been obsessed with movies and then at a certain point I just wanted to make them," he said. "I guess the urge on some level is to have a dialogue with your heroes. You grow up, you love so many films, you love so many filmmakers that you kinda want to engage as deep of a level as you can."
