Migrant Boat Approaches Italian Island After Judge Overrules Interior Minister

A boat carrying 147 migrants approached the Italian island of Lampedusa on the morning of August 15 after an Italian court suspended an order by the country’s interior minister banning the boat from landing.

Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said that he was contesting the ruling of the Regional Administrative Court of Lazio suspending a ban on the boat, which belongs to the migrant rescue NGO Proactiva Open Arms, from landing in Italian territory.

The Twitter account of the boat, the Open Arms, wrote that, after 13 days of waiting, they were in sight of land, saying: “the end of this nightmare is closer.” Credit: Open Arms via Storyful
