Mike Pompeo, the Director of the CIA, is being touted as a replacement for embattled US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

President Donald Trump was being told by advisers that Mr Pompeo, who delivers his daily briefing, could fill the role of America's top diplomat, Axios reported.

Mr Trump was said to have been furious after NBC News reported this week that Mr Tillerson had called him a "moron" and considered leaving his job.

Mr Tillerson subsequently gave a public statement of support for the president and his agenda, but failed to specifically deny that he had used the word "moron".

A State Department spokeswoman later denied that he had.

The president has said he has "full confidence" in Mr Tillerson but speculation has been mounting over how long he will stay in the post.

John Kelly, the White House chief of staff, is said to want to avoid more changes in an administration that has already seen a series of high profile departures.

Mr Trump is said to interact well and frequently with Mr Pompeo, who would also be seen by other world leaders and diplomats as part of the president's inner circle.
