Yahoo News Miley Cyrus speaks out after being shamed for Liam Hemsworth split: 'You don't deserve him'
The public has wasted little time in picking sides in the Liam Hemsworth/Miley Cyrus split. On Saturday, Cyrus’s spokesperson issued a joint statement announcing that she and Hemsworth are separating after less than a year of marriage. The on-off pair were married last December.
“Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time,” a rep for Cyrus said. “Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy.”
Since that announcement, photos have emerged of Cyrus, who identifies as queer, kissing another newly single celebrity: Kaitlynn Carter, whose marriage to reality star Brody Jenner in June 2018 turned out to not be legally binding. Carter and Jenner revealed their own breakup earlier this month.
While Hemsworth’s Instagram is being flooded with supportive comments like “congratulations on your divorce, you deserve better in your life,” his pop star ex is getting blamed for the breakup — and body-shamed in the process.
“I’m over Miley, man she needs to grow up and realize you don’t live forever and life’s not about just getting laid, trust me,” read one comment. “Once you realize what you had, it’s gonna hurt real bad. He loves you and your fur babies. You’ve become annoying to watch and hear about and this makes me so sad. Your minute’s almost up, and then what? Good luck love, I truly do wish you the best.”
“Pushed that man away again huh?” someone wrote. “You don’t deserve him.”
“Girl, IDK what is wrong with you but seemingly you need to grow up ... losing a good man,” read another comment.
“Ugh you don't deserve Liam,” complained a commenter. “You broke his heart yet again and now you're already spotted kissing Kaitlynn Carter. Ridiculous!”
“Good for him,” added a Hemsworth fan. “He wanted a wife, and future mother of his children. Not a bomb-throwing pothead radical washout with barely two brain cells (left after all the WEED).”
Cyrus has also been fielding body-shaming remarks after posting a bikini photo that had some fans accusing her of “losing a lot of weight lately.” “She needs some meat on them bones,” added a commenter.
While some expressed concern about the singer’s slim figure, many defended her and tried to shut down the scrutiny.
“If I have learned anything from these comments it is that it is ok to shame another woman because she is ‘unhealthy’ because she has ALWAYS been naturally thin, yet if she was morbidly obese calling her ‘unhealthy’ would be shaming her?” a fan shot back at body-shaming commenters. “We can tell one to eat a burger but can't say to another maybe you shouldn't have that burger?? It makes no sense to me. Get it together ladies. We are supposed to be lifting each other up, not tearing one another down. Eat the burger, don't eat the burger, Miley looks healthy and happy.”
Cyrus, meanwhile, has indirectly responded to the backlash with a thinly veiled Instagram about the futility of fighting “evolution” and why “change is inevitable.”
“Don’t fight evolution, because you will never win,” she wrote alongside a photo of her posing in front of Italy’s Dolomites mountain range. “Like the mountain I am standing on top of, which was once underwater, connected with Africa, change is inevitable. The Dolomites were not created overnight, it was over millions of years that this magnificent beauty was formed. My dad always told me, ‘Nature never hurries but it is always on time’ ... it fills my heart with peace and hope KNOWING that is true. I was taught to respect the planet and its process and I am committed to doing the same with my own.”
While critics appear to be blaming Cyrus’s sexuality for her split, she defended the role her queer identity played in her marriage to Hemsworth in an interview with Vanity Fair published this spring.
“The reason that people get married sometimes can be old-fashioned, but I think the reason we got married isn’t old-fashioned — I actually think it’s kind of New Age,” Cyrus told the magazine. “We’re redefining, to be f***ing frank, what it looks like for someone that’s a queer person like myself to be in a hetero relationship. A big part of my pride and my identity is being a queer person. What I preach is: People fall in love with people, not gender, not looks, not whatever. What I’m in love with exists on almost a spiritual level. It has nothing to do with sexuality. Relationships and partnerships in a new generation — I don’t think they have so much to do with sexuality or gender. Sex is actually a small part, and gender is a very small, almost irrelevant part of relationships.”
