Millwall vs Crystal Palace - LIVE!

It’s FA Cup third round weekend and the draw has thrown up what looks like a cracking London derby this Saturday lunchtime as Premier League Crystal Palace head to The Den to take on Championship Millwall.

New Palace boss Patrick Vieira won the FA Cup five times as a player, including scoring the winning penalty in Arsenal’s 2005 shootout victory over Manchester United.

The Eagles have made a bright start under the Frenchman in the league and look in little danger of being sucked into a relegation battle so a cup run could well be high on the agenda.

Millwall, meanwhile, are similarly mid-table in the Championship, sat in 11th after an inconsistent run ahead of their first home game in more than a month, due to Covid postponements.

You can follow all the action from The Den with Standard Sport’s LIVE blog below...

Michael Olise the match-winner for Palace in a brilliant second-half display but Millwall can take heart from the way they matched and even outplayed Palace for long periods. The Championship side finished with a spell of dominance and could easily have taken the game to extra-time – but it’s the Eagles who progress.

FT: Millwall 1-2 Crystal Palace

14:39 , Malik Ouzia

A Michael Olise masterclass in the second half and it’s dragged Crystal Palace into the fourth round.

14:33 , Malik Ouzia

90+1 mins: Five minutes to be added...

14:30 , Malik Ouzia

87 mins: So close!

Billy Mitchell delivers a superb cross from the right and both Cooper and Boateng are inches away from diverting it home as the ball flashes across the face.

14:27 , Malik Ouzia

84 mins: Almost another moment of genius from Olise, who carves a pass in behind off the outside of his boot for Gallagher to chase but there’s just too much on it. Long slides out to claim and catches a boot in the face from the hurdling Gallagher for his troubles.

14:25 , Malik Ouzia

82 mins: There’s a sign of how this game has turned. Jack Butland is now booked for time wasting, having watched his opposite number dally for much of the first half.

14:23 , Malik Ouzia

80 mins: Time to roll the dice then. A triple change for the home side, including the introduction of big Matt Smith, who we all know loves an FA Cup story.

14:21 , Malik Ouzia

78 mins: That’s a chance. A bit of a scramble in the Palace box and Afobe keeps it alive, laying back to Bennett, but his low strike doesn’t have the power behind it to beat Butland.

Millwall have regained a foothold after Palace’s blitz at the start of the second half and the Den is deafening again. The question is now whether the hosts have the quality to fashion the chances to level the tie.

14:15 , Malik Ouzia

72 mins: Into the final 20 minutes then and really Millwall haven’t managed to cause Palace any problems at all since the break. A reminder that there are no replays at this stage this year, so if they do manage level we’ll be headed for extra time.

14:11 , Malik Ouzia

67 mins: Something thrown from the crowd strikes Olise as he goes over to take a corner, but he’s not fussed, motioning at the home fans to bring it on, which might not be especially wise.

From the corner, Millwall don’t clear and the ball falls kindly for Gallagher on the edge of the box but the midfielder gets his finish all wrong and skews both high and wide.

14:07 , Malik Ouzia

64 mins: It’s not about to get any easier for the home side, because Christian Benteke and Odsonne Edouard are coming on.

Eze and Mateta are the duo to make way - unsurprisingly, Olise stays on.

GOAL! Millwall 1-2 Crystal Palace | Jean-Philippe Mateta 58'

14:01 , Malik Ouzia

What a turnaround!

And no surprise, it’s all about Michael Olise again. Neither Cooper nor Malone look capable of dealing with him - the only difference this time is that he crosses rather than shoots after checking back and Mateta is unmarked in the middle. He can’t miss.

13:58 , Malik Ouzia

55 mins: He looks unplayable at the minute, Olise, and Palace are getting the ball out to him at every possible opportunity. Dan’s right, it’s a different game after the break.

Dan Kilpatrick is at the Den

13:56 , Malik Ouzia

The start of the second half could scarcely be more different from the first, with Palace pegging Millwall back in their own half. The Lions are struggling to contain Olise, who nearly scored again with a carbon copy of his goal – only for this effort to come back off the post.

13:55 , Malik Ouzia

52 mins: He’s almost done it again!

It’s a carbon copy, Olise jinking inside his man and bending to the far corner. It hits the upright again, but this time bounces out rather than in.

13:53 , Malik Ouzia

50 mins: And immediately, there’s another blow for the hosts and George Saville is forced off with a problem. Maikel Kieftenbeld is on in his place.

13:52 , Malik Ouzia

49 mins: Oof. Millwall won’t be happy when they see this - it looks like Mateta was just offside when he received the ball in the build-up to that goal.

GOAL! Millwall 1-1 Crystal Palace | Michael Olise 46'

13:49 , Malik Ouzia

And that is more like it!

It’s a decent move, Mateta showing good feet to lay off to Gallagher, who spreads it wide for Olise and from there it’s just brilliant from the winger, shifting inside onto his left-foot and curling in off the far post.

13:48 , Malik Ouzia

We are back underway...

13:48 , Malik Ouzia

Right then, the Palace team are in the tunnel early, a pretty frustrated-looking Patrick Vieira making his way past his players.

They’ll need a much-improved showing here.

13:42 , Malik Ouzia

Fair play to Anthony Taylor, by the way. He’s let a feisty encounter flow and he’s also made a superb decision regarding that Palace penalty shout at the end of the half.

It looked in real-time like Saville had caught Eze from behind and there’s no VAR in play so had he given it it would have stood. It was only on the replay that you realised what a good tackle it was.

Dan Kilpatrick is at the Den

13:40 , Malik Ouzia

Millwall deserve their lead on the balance of play but Palace woke up for the final 15 minutes of the first half and began to threaten, with Gallagher going close. The question for the Lions is whether they can maintain this intensity for 90 minutes.

HT: Millwall 1-0 Palace

13:33 , Malik Ouzia

There’s an upset on the cards in south London...

13:32 , Malik Ouzia

45+2 mins: Now then.

Palace are up in arms, they want a penalty here as Saville slides in from behind to nick the ball away from Eze as he goes to pull the trigger.

Anything doing? No, says Anthony Taylor, and he’s right - it’s a brilliant tackle.

13:27 , Malik Ouzia

42 mins: It’s fair to say Millwall have been particularly hot on not giving Palace’s lively trio of Eze, Gallagher and Olise any time on the ball.

Gallagher is the latest to get a hefty challenge, this time from McNamara, and he heaves the resulting free-kick miles over everyone and out for a goal-kick.

13:21 , Malik Ouzia

36 mins: That’s close!

Eze opens things up with a lovely little dart inside and though he’s halted, the ball only breaks to Gallagher, who whips across it, towards the far corner and he’s not far away at all.

13:19 , Malik Ouzia

34 mins: Patrick Vieira isn’t happy with these time wasting antics either and Anthony Taylor trots across to have a word with him. Rather you than me, ref.

13:14 , Malik Ouzia

29 mins: We’ve not even had half-an-hour yet and already Palace are complaining about some time wasting from Millwall as Long takes an age to kick the ball out of his hands.

13:10 , Malik Ouzia

25 mins: That’s Palace’s best moment so far. Schlupp finds space between the lines and turns to drive at the edge of the box, where he lets fly and stings the palms of George Long in the Millwall goal.

13:09 , Malik Ouzia

24 mins: I appreciate it’s tough for Butland coming in not having played much football, but man. That is a proper shocker. Just hoof it, son.

GOAL! Millwall 1-0 Crystal Palace | Benik Afobe 17'

13:02 , Malik Ouzia

What on Earth is Jack Butland thinking here? The Palace ‘keeper is pressured by both Millwall forwards and tries to shimmy up the middle between them but half leaves the ball behind and ends up just scuffing it forwards in a panic.

Afobe is fastest to react and can’t miss. The underdogs are ahead at The Den.

13:01 , Malik Ouzia

16 mins: Gallagher is grand to continue after a bit of work from the physios but he hasn’t been much of a feature in the game so far as the home side have looked to swamp the midfield.

That Afobe chance remains the only opening of note so far.

12:56 , Malik Ouzia

11 mins: Not quite sure where it’s come from, but Conor Gallagher has picked up a cut above his eye and will need that mopping up so Anthony Taylor halts play.

12:54 , Malik Ouzia

8 mins: Chance!

It falls to Benik Afobe, who reacts fastest to meet Bradshaw’s low cross at the near-post but leans back and heaves it miles over the crossbar. Should’ve done better.

12:50 , Malik Ouzia

5 mins: On the pitch, as you’d expect, Millwall have started fast, sharp in the tackle, and Palace are content to try and take a bit of the sting out of it, Ward knocking all the way back to Andersen and then Butland.

12:46 , Malik Ouzia

1 min: A pretty bleak start to the afternoon as Crystal Palace’s players are booed by a section of the home support as they take the knee.

We are up and running at The Den...

Right then, ten minutes to go until kick-off and a cracking atmosphere is building at The Den for a south London derby, despite the frankly rancid weather in the capital this morning.

Millwall remain without Jed Wallace, which hands another opportunity to back-up goalkeeper George Long for this afternoon’s clash.

Scott Malone is also brought into the starting XI with Murray Wallace absent and first-choice stopper Bartosz Bialkowski named on the bench alongside 15-year-old Zak Lovelace.

Gallagher, Eze, Olise all start

11:55 , Malik Ouzia

So, as promised, Patrick Vieira has named a strong starting XI, with six of the side that started the defeat to West Ham keeping their places and some those coming in arguably strengthening the side.

The exciting trio of Conor Gallagher, Ebere Eze and Michael Olise are among those brought into the lineup, while Jack Butland gets a start in goal.

Standard Sport prediction

11:26 , Malik Ouzia

It certainly won’t be easy and Millwall can take solace in the fact they boast one of the better defensive records in the Championship but one would expect this Palace side to dominate the ball and create openings.

Palace to win 1-0.
