Mince pie fans urged to stick to buying them at two certain supermarkets
The best and worst supermarket mince pies have been revealed in a new Which? study - and the winner is NOT Aldi. Aldi fans have been warned this year they're better off shopping elsewhere, after Waitrose won the Which? taste test.
Waitrose No.1 Brown Butter Mince Pies with Cognac were ranked top. The consumer group explained: "These top-scoring pies impressed our expert panel with their lovely crisp, buttery pastry, enticing aroma and generous nut, spice and citrus filling. They also appreciated the subtle boozy warmth.
"The pies have a simple, homemade traditional look – a plain pastry case and a dusting of caster sugar that charmed our experts. One said they never usually bought supermarket mince pies, but that they would buy these. They may be relatively pricey, but with a lead of six percentage points over the next best mince pies, they're a standout choice this Christmas."

Aldi Specially Selected All Butter Mince Pies – 71% - came second. The group said: "These stylish snowflake mince pies are a festive delight, packed with juicy fruit and spices. Our judges liked that they weren't too sweet – a common complaint elsewhere – and appreciated the intricate lid design, finished with fine powdered sugar 'snow'.
"According to our panel, they're very moreish, and it's tempting to eat more than one, so it's lucky they were also the cheapest mince pies we tested!" Tesco, Sainsbury's, Lidl, Asda and Morrisons fans have been warned the mince pies at these supermarkets didn't make the cut.
Natalie Hitchins, Which? Head of Home Products and Services, said: "For many of us, Christmas wouldn’t be complete without a mince pie. There’s nothing quite like that buttery and fruity taste to get you in the festive spirit. Our experts tasted premium mince pies from the biggest UK supermarkets to discover which ones could make this holiday season a little more special without stretching the budget too far.
"The competition was fierce this year, but Waitrose was the only winner of our Best Buy endorsement. For those looking for a more affordable option, Aldi's excellent Great Value pies are tasty but don’t break the bank."
