Mindhunter: Background detail teases huge serial killer for season 3

Mindhunter may have revealed which serial killer will feature in the show’s third season.

The crime drama launched its second run on Netflix last week, with episodes focusing on Son of Sam, Charles Manson and the Atlanta Child Murders.

Creator Joe Penhall, producer/ co-director David Fincher and the show’s lead stars have made no secret of the fact they hope the show lasts for five seasons. Should the show get renewed for a third, a subtle Easter egg hidden in the background of a scene in episode one confirms that an infamous figure will more than likely be showing up.

The moment in question comes when Dr Wendy Carr (Anna Torv) is showing the FBI’s behavioural Science Unit a board filled with people they should interview in the near future.

While Carr briefs Tench (Holt McCallany) and Ford (Jonathan Groff) on the life of William Henry Hance, John Wayne Gacy’s face and name can clearly be seen.

The prospect of Gacy as the new subject becomes even more likely when considering the fact that John Douglas – the profiler the show is based on – spent some time interviewing him, albeit over the phone, for his studies.

Gacy was convicted and sentences to death in 1980 for raping and murdering at least 33 teenage boys in his home town in Illinois. He was known for making public appearances in costume as a clown and, over the years, has inspired several serial killer characters in films and TV shows. He was played by Brian Dennehy in 1992 miniseries To Catch a Killer.

Mindhunter is available to stream on Netflix now.
