Hot off his role as serial killer Edmund Kemper in dark Netflix drama Mindhunter, Cameron Britton has been cast in The Girl in the Spider's Web.

The Sony film is a sequel to/reboot of David Fincher's 2011 The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, his adaptation of Stieg Larsson's 2005 bestseller.

Variety describes Edmund's part as a "key role" – a computer expert who Lisbeth Salander contacts when she needs help.

He joins Claire Foy as Salander, Sylvia Hoeks as Salander's twin sister and Claes Bang as the bad guy.

Fede Alvarez directs, with a screenplay by Steven Knight with input from Alvarez and Jay Basu.

Foy is the third person to play Lisbeth on the big screen.

Noomi Rapace played the hacker in Niels Arden Oplev's 2009 Swedish-language adaptation, opposite Michael Nyqvist as Mikael Blomkvist.

They reprised their roles in Daniel Alfredson's concluding parts of Larsson's Millennium trilogy - The Girl Who Played with Fire (2009) and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest (2010). All three novels were published after Larsson's death in 2004.

Sony attempted to launch an English language version of the series, but the mixed response to and poor box office performance of his 2011 version of Dragon Tattoo, which starred Rooney Mara as Lisbeth and Daniel Craig as Mikael, seemingly put a premature end to those plans.

With the posthumous success of Larsson's novels, his estate authorised David Lagercrantz to continue the Millennium series.

The Girl in the Spider's Web, on which the new Sony film is based, was published in 2015. A follow-up, The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye, was released this year.

Due for release on October 19, 2018, The Girl in the Spider's Web is the first of the Millennium series to be adapted into an English language film before a Swedish one.
