Minnehaha Falls Remain Frozen as Fresh Snow Falls in Minneapolis

Minnehaha Falls in Minneapolis, Minnesota, remained frozen on Friday, January 19, after fresh snow blanketed many parts of the state the day before.

The National Weather Service said the largest report came from Windom, where 15 inches fell. Temperatures in Minneapolis on Saturday dropped to nine degrees, according to Accuweather.

Minnehaha Falls freezes over every winter, according to local media, and the sight attracts a multitude of visitors, some of whom try to get close to the frozen falls, or walk behind them. However, authorities warned that the ice posed a danger, and urged people to adhere to the “no trespassing” signs, CBS Minnesota reported.

In January 2018, a chunk of ice broke loose as a group of people stood in front of the falls, and reportedly hit a 20-year-old woman in the head, causing her to fall and injure her arm and wrist. Credit: @Saar0323 via Storyful
