A dashcam gives drivers a reassuring feeling that if that idiot in front did cause an accident, you’ve got it on record.

I’ve been trying Mio’s C330 model, and it’s a clever piece of kit. It was easy to fit, but I had to buy my own memory card – apparently this is normal. It switches on automatically when you start the car and briefly shows you a moving image on its tiny screen. This soon switches to your speed in kph – much less distracting.

While on the move, the device warns you, in a tinny-voiced American accent, about speed cameras ahead. It spots them when they are there but it also often sees them when they are not. On my home ground I know where the cameras live.

To watch it on your computer you need a suitable cable (not supplied, hence much fishing about in drawers) and you select which file you want and press go. The picture quality is impressive and it also shows your speed and position. You can also press a button to take still photographs if something catches your eye.

For £79.99 it is pretty good value for peace of mind, although instructions for its use are a bit thin on the ground. It is available from mio.com.
