Juncker says would like Britain to rejoin EU after Brexit

EU chief executive Jean-Claude Juncker renewed an offer to Britain on Wednesday to stay in the European Union and said he hoped that even if it goes through with Brexit it would apply to rejoin the bloc. Speaking to the European Parliament, where he had endorsed a statement on Tuesday by European Council President Donald Tusk that Britain would be welcome to remain Juncker said he accepted a share of responsibility for the British referendum vote in 2016 to leave the Union. "I still feel the exit of Britain is a catastrophe, yes, a defeat we all have to take responsibility for," he said, responding to a written question from a German lawmaker who had asked if Juncker felt responsible for Brexit.

'Pyongyang Olympics?' Backlash reveals changing attitudes in South Korea

An agreement between South and North Korea to march under a unity flag and field a joint ice hockey team at next month's Olympics was met by sharp criticism from many in the South on Thursday, highlighting changing attitudes towards the country's northern neighbour. The controversy reveals a South Korean public far less wedded to the idea of inter-Korean unity than previous generations, analysts say, a changing dynamic that may shape South Korean President Moon Jae-in's efforts at reconciliation with the isolated North. North Korea's participation in the Olympics has been seen as a win for Moon, who hopes to use the event to make a diplomatic breakthrough in the standoff over North Korea's nuclear and missile programme.

Lucky loser Pera sends ninth seed Konta out

Lucky loser Bernarda Pera sent ninth seed Johanna Konta tumbling out of the second round of the Australian Open on Thursday with a 6-4 7-5 upset in blazing sunshine on court two. A lacklustre serving display from the British number one - she failed to land a single ace - allowed lefthander Pera ample opportunity to showcase her powerful returns off both sides and the 23-year-old American duly delivered. A single break of serve for 5-4 was enough for the world number 123 to sew up the first set after 39 minutes when Konta sent a backhand long, and Pera was soon all over the Briton's serve in the second.

NASA's 2018 Mission to the Sun Begins Testing Spacecraft for 2,600-Degree Heat and Extreme Illumination

Later this year, NASA will launch its very first spacecraft designed to “touch the sun,” skimming the surface of the star we rely on. But while the sun is life-sustaining here on Earth, it’s pretty brutal up-close and personal. That means that before the Parker Solar Probe launches this summer, NASA wants to be absolutely positive the spacecraft can survive both its journey and its destination. Such certainty will require extensive testing before the agency can set its creation free.

Tory MP tears into Boris Johnson over 'disgraceful, entirely deliberate deception' on £350m NHS claim

A senior Conservative MP has hit out at Boris Johnson over his continued insistence that an extra £350m could be invested in the NHS after Brexit. Sarah Wollaston, the chair of the House of Commons Health Committee, said the Foreign Secretary’s use of the false statistic was “a disgrace” and “a deliberate deception”. An additional £350m of investment in health care once Britain leaves the EU was a key pledge of the Leave campaign during the 2016 referendum and was famously plastered on the side of a bus, which Mr Johnson posed in front of.

Police search offices of Belgian company supplying passports to Africa

BRUSSELS/NAIROBI (Reuters) - Police on Wednesday searched the headquarters of Belgian company Semlex, which supplies passports to various African countries, and the home of its CEO, Albert Karaziwan. Earlier this week, authorities in the Comoros Islands, an archipelago off the east coast of Africa where Semlex has supplied identity documents since 2007, cancelled 170 passports that the government said had been improperly issued to foreigners, including many Iranians. The current government of the Comoros last week also withdrew a diplomatic passport issued to Karaziwan by a previous administration that had appointed him a roving ambassador.

Strike averted at New York's main fruit and vegetable market

A work stoppage at a market that supplies much of New York City's fresh fruit and vegetables was averted early on Wednesday when negotiators tentatively reached a pay deal as the previous contract expired, the labor union said. Employees at the sprawling Hunts Point Terminal Produce Market in the city's Bronx borough had been prepared to go on strike for the first time since 1986 if there was no agreement before the contract expired at midnight. The deal reached overnight covers 1,100 warehouse workers, drivers and other employees, according to the Teamsters Local 202, the employees' union.
