Missing Sheffield Student: Body Found In River

Police searching for missing Sheffield student Caroline Everest have found a body of a woman in a river in the city.

The body has yet to be formally identified but police said they believe it to be Ms Everest.

The discovery was made at 3.45am in Porter Brook, a small river just off Summerfield Street, close to the eastern end of Ecclesall Road.

A large area was cordoned off around the scene by police as officers spent the day combing the banks of the river for clues.

The 18-year-old had not been seen since she left the Corporation nightclub on Milton Street at 2.30am on Sunday.

The body was found half a mile from the nightclub, close to the city's inner ring road.

The student at Sheffield Hallam University did not turn up for a family meal later that day.

Her family has been informed and South Yorkshire Police said they are being supported by specially-trained officers.

A spokesman said officers are continuing to work out the circumstances surrounding her death.

A number of floral tributes have been laid at the police cordon on Eccleshall Road.

One note read: "RIP Caroline. Such a sweet, lovely girl, you will be missed by so many people. Sleep tight."

Sheffield Hallam University said it was offering support to students and staff.

A spokeswoman said: "We are deeply shocked and saddened to hear that South Yorkshire Police have today found a body that they believe to be Caroline Everest.

"Our thoughts at this time are with Caroline's family and close friends."

Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen Ms Everest to come forward.

They have also released a picture of her taken on the night she went missing.

The spokesman said: "Did you see her walking between the Corporation nightclub and Summerfield Street?

"Caroline ... was white, 5ft 6ins tall, and of slim build.

"She was wearing a black dress with a black cardigan and wore her long dark hair in a low ponytail, and wears glasses. She was carrying a black handbag with a cream strap.

"If you saw her, or have information that could help, call South Yorkshire Police."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the force on 101, quoting incident number 998 of 22 November.
