The Missing and Cold Feet star James Nesbitt will star in BBC One's new crime thriller Bloodlands.

Written by Chris Brandon and executive produced by Line of Duty and Bodyguard's Jed Mercurio, the new series focuses on Northern Irish police detective Tom Brannick (Nesbitt).

After discovering a possible suicide note in a car found at the bottom of Strangford Lough loch, Brannick quickly connects it to an infamous cold case that has a huge personal significance to him, and sets out on a desperate hunt for a legendary assassin – resulting in a high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse.

On starring in the new drama, Nesbitt said: "It's great to be back making a drama in and about Northern Ireland, which now has a film and television industry as good as any in the world.

"We have compelling scripts from a brilliant young writer who was raised in County Down, which are very exciting and psychologically complex. I can't wait to start."

The series is new writer Chris Brandon's first original drama commission, and he added that it's a "total privilege" to work with Nesbitt, Mercurio and the team at HTM Television.

"I'm absolutely delighted that the first opportunity I get to tell a story on this scale, it is one that is so close to home and the people and places that raised me," Chris added.
