Mobility scooter rider in 'life-threatening' condition after lorry crash

A PERSON on a mobility scooter has been left with life-threatening injuries after a crash involving a lorry.

The incident happened at around 10am this morning in Lottbridge Drove between Cross Levels Way and the Birch roundabout in Eastbourne.

Police have closed off the road for crash investigation work and the mobility scooter is still at the scene.

An air ambulance also attended the scene and took the person to Brighton.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Just after 10.10am on Wednesday, June 22, police responded to a collision between a lorry and person in a mobility scooter in Lottbridge Drove, Eastbourne.

“The person in the mobility scooter was taken to hospital by air ambulance with serious, life-threatening injuries. The road remains closed and is not known when it will reopen.

“Any witnesses to the collision or has CCTV footage of it is asked to report it to investigating officers by emailing collision.appeal@sussex.police.uk or call 101 quoting Operation Alderstone.”

A South East Coast Ambulance (SECAmb) spokesman said: “I can confirm that SECAmb was called shortly before 10.15am today to Birch Road/Lottbridge Drive to reports of a road traffic collision involving a vehicle and a person.

“Ambulance crews attended and were joined at the scene by the air ambulance service.

“The person was assessed and treated at the scene and has been airlifted to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with potentially serious injuries.”

Pictures show the mobility scooter still at the scene while crash investigation work was being conducted.

The lorry can also be seen on the road.

There is traffic due to the road closure to the A22 southbound from Golden Jubilee Way to Eastbourne Hospital.
