Modern Family is now set to end after an 11th season.

It was previously thought that the hit ABC comedy series would end after its 10th run, but Deadline is now reporting that talks are under way for one final, shorter season.

Back in August, showrunner Christopher Lloyd spoke about the possibility of an 11th outing, saying: "We are very open to it – we have expressed that to ABC."

He said it was while planning season 10 they "found out that [they] were getting into some very rich new areas with these characters, that there is a lot more to explore in the series".

Lloyd then wanted to know if season 10 would be the show's last, saying: "We need to know relatively soon if it's the last season so we can both recognise the show but also recognise the people who have been together for 10 years."

Season 10 is now deep into production, but fans can take heart that it might not be the last.

They may be slightly distressed to learn, however, that season 10 is going to kill off a "significant character".

Lloyd previously teased: "We do deal with a death, which is certainly a topic that families have to deal with, and on television, it's not easy to do because that's a heavy subject. But at the same time, it would seem unusual for a family not to go through it."

Modern Family season 10 premieres on September 26 at 9pm on ABC.
