Modern Family's Haley and Phil Dunphy are reuniting for a new comedy series – or at least the actors who played them are.
Sarah Hyland – who played the oldest Dunphy child Haley on the long-running ABC sitcom – has been cast as one of the leads in new comedy Yours, Mine & Paul's, which will be executive-produced by Ty Burrell, who played Haley's dad Phil, under his new production company Desert Whale Productions.
Deadline reports that the show will centre around Lauren, played by Hyland, an impulsive woman who agrees to be the egg donor and surrogate for her best friend Paul and his husband Xander so that they can have a baby.
Despite the fact that Lauren and Xander hate each other and are constantly competing against each other for Paul's attention, according to Deadline. "Lauren likes the idea of being the glowing, pregnant centre of attention for nine months without having to take care of a crying baby at the end of it".
But there's a major twist in the tale from the outset as Paul suddenly dies in the show's cold open – leaving a pregnant Lauren facing impending motherhood and the prospect of co-parenting the baby with her nemesis Xander.
The multi-camera series, which is being written and co-executive produced by Julia Meltzer, is now in development at ABC and is the first sale for Burrell's production company. Hyland has tweeted her excitement about her casting, replying to Meltzer's tweet saying that she can "now publicly freak out" about Hyland's casting with "SAME GURL!!!!"
Hyland and Burrell played ditzy Haley and "cool dad" Phil on Modern Family for 11 years before the show came to an emotional final conclusion earlier this year, with Haley, her husband Dylan Marshall (Reid Ewing) and their baby twins finally moving out of her parents' home.
Hyland was supposed to get married earlier this month but a certain pandemic put a halt to her and fiance Wells Adams' plans – so they decided to get dressed up in white, drink wine and take photos anyway.
Sharing several pictures on Instagram the actress wrote, "A couple, a pandemic and a postponed wedding: A series. We were supposed to get married today. Instead... we took pictures and drank wine. I love you to Pluto and back."
