Molotov Cocktails Thrown at Police in Maracaibo as Second Day of Strikes Draws to an End

Molotov cocktails were thrown toward police in the San Jacinto neighborhood of Maracaibo on the evening of July 27, as the second day of national strikes against against government plans to write a new constitution drew to a close.

Streets had been empty throughout Maracaibo due to the strike, with barricades erected on some, according to the pro-opposition El Nacional.

The Venezuelan government issued a ban on protests from July 28 to August 1, and plans to elect delegates to the Constituent Assembly, which would have power to rewrite the constitution and shut down the opposition-led legislature, on July 31.

The US government ordered family members of employees at its embassy in Venezuela to leave on July 27, as seven people were killed during the strike, according to Reuters. Credit: Instagram/Juan Diego Amado via Storyful
