US sitcom Mom is coming to an end, less than six months after former lead Anna Faris announced that she was leaving the show.

CBS' longest-running comedy series on the air, which premiered back in 2013, will air its series finale later this year, Deadline is reporting.

After eight successful seasons, Mom will be ending with its current run, with its finale expected to air in the US on May 6.

The news of Mom's cancellation comes after Allison Janney, who plays Bonnie Plunkett, admitted that both Anna Faris and her character Christy are "very missed" on the show.

Following the news that Mom had been nominated for three Critics' Choice Awards, Janney said that Anna's exit felt "very odd". "She is very missed," she added. "Anna is missed and her character on the show is missed."

There's no hard feelings, though, with Allison insisting that the Mom cast and crew are "happy" that Faris is "doing what she wants to do", and that the story of Mom was able to continue without its lead.

"We are just happy she is doing what she wants to do now and we are happy that we are still able to tell these stories about these great women in recovery."

Shortly after Faris announced that she would be leaving the series, Mom showrunner Gemma Baker revealed why they had chosen not to kill off her character.

"Our audience has been rooting for her for seven seasons and that loss felt like it would be too devastating for them and for our other characters," Baker explained. "It was important to us that Christy moved on to bigger things.

"Quite often when people are in recovery their lives get bigger in ways they couldn't before have imagined. And so that will be the case for Christy. She has been working toward her dreams for a while now and we feel like the audience will be happy for her."

Mom airs on CBS in the US.
