An Edinburgh local has told how he and his wife helped a policeman after his car flipped in a collision.

At around 12.45pm on Saturday afternoon, two cars reportedly collided at the traffic lights between Kirkgate and Liberton Gardens.

Stark images from the scene show a police car flipped onto its back and the bonnet of a black Kia bucked inwards. Two police officers were taken to hospital and there were no reports of other injuries.

Debris can be seen scattered across the road while other drivers, including a motorcyclist, stopped at the scene.

The police car was responding to an emergency when the two vehicles collided.

Edinburgh local Marek Soltysiak and his wife saw the crash in his rearview mirror and rushed to help the officers out of the upturned vehicle.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Marek said: "I saw it. The lights were on green for the Kia and the police car had its sirens on and drove slowly through the cross road. I saw it in my back mirror and came back.

"Me and my wife opened the door for the policemen to help them out. My wife has the knowledge to help with injuries and fortunately, they were not needed. Everyone was safe."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 12.45pm on Saturday, September 14, 2024 a police car responding to an emergency call was involved in a collision with another vehicle on Liberton Gardens in Edinburgh.

“Two police officers were taken to hospital. There were no reports of any other injuries.
