Moment plumes of thick smoke fill the air in huge Coventry garage fire

Footage shows plumes of smoke billowing into air as flames tore through garages on a Coventry street. It was taken by a nearby business that was temporarily evacuated during the blaze on Stoney Stanton Road earlier today (Monday, November 18).

A dozen firefighters, two on engines from Coventry station and another from Smethwick on standby nearby, responded to 999 called at just before 10am to report the fire. Three garage storage units in the rear of two gardens were on fire.

Flames had also spread two wooden sheds. Police closed off a section of the road and several businesses nearby, including a car wash, were temporarily evacuated.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire with two hose reels. Crews then damped down and raked out large quantities of building materials stored in the units.

The road remained closed for more than an hour. Crews are set to return to the scene later this afternoon, according to a West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) spokesperson.

"A full inspection has been carried out, and we can confirm no further fire spread beyond the affected garages," WMFS spokesperson said. "Firefighters used thermal imaging cameras to monitor and check for hotspots but none remained. We will revisit the scene this afternoon to check for any hotspots that may have flared up."
