Monty Don says garden staple should be planted in October for 'decades of pleasure'
Monty Don has unveiled the perfect garden feature to plant in October for years of "beauty".
Sharing his tip in BBC Gardeners' World Magazine, the gardening expert advised that now is the time to get hedges into the ground.
According to Don, October's warm soil conditions make it an ideal time to secure a lush, beautiful boundary for the future.

In a piece called 'The Full Monty', Don shared his wisdom about this favourite, indicating that the roots will easily take hold next month due to the "warm" soil and minimal demand from the plants' leaves.
He assured those without green thumbs that autumn hedge planting doesn't necessitate any particular "horticultural expertise".
Monty remarked: "So plant hedges. Make them low, tall, straight and curved. October is the best month because the soil is warm, and the roots will get established with little or no demand from the foliage."
He continued: "Plant small and not only will it be much cheaper, but it will also establish much quicker. Keep the base weed free and mulched, and let the leaders of each plant reach the desired height before cutting back.
"Then trim once a year after the birds have nested and the young fledged. That's it. Not a lot of room for horticultural expertise or opportunities for displaying your gardening credentials. But decades of pleasure and beauty await you."
Green-thumbed enthusiasts should not only focus on planting hedges this autumn.
During a previous episode of Gardeners' World, he emphasised that preparing bulbs for the following spring is a critical task.
He detailed that the "biggest" and "essential job" during the remainder of the month and into October involves planting bulbs, underlining the crucial factor of ensuring good drainage.
To illustrate his point, Monty used a pot that was designed with a significant hole at the base, complemented by lateral drainage, and opted to lay a crock at the bottom.
His past advice includes: "And really, most bulbs are better planted in September, if you can get it done. It's not essential; you can plant in October, and tulips shouldn't be planted till November and December."
In addition to bulb planning, Monty highlighted another key autumnal garden chore - taking cuttings, which helps maintain a vibrant garden into the next season. He has previously mentioned that this is a straightforward process that yields a bounty of new plants.
A cutting becomes an exact copy of the mother plant, and using semi-ripe cuttings from the current year's growth is usually the best approach.
