Moo-ving On Up: Confused Cow Rescued After Falling Onto A ROOF

A confused cow had no idea what was going on when it fell 20ft and landed on top of a garage roof.

The animal was happily chewing the grass on an elevated field in Shibden, West Yorkshire, when it dropped onto the sun terrace of a house.

Firefighters were a little confused themselves when they got the call that a cow needed rescuing from a roof, but rushed to the scene to sort out the problem.

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “The owners thought they had been burgled and then they saw the cow.

"We had to get a vet who came and anaesthetised it and we used a special cow harness to lift it up and bring it down.

"It had dropped about 20ft and it was fine.”

The rescue mission took three and a half hours in total and the cow was successfully removed and taken back to the field.

A neighbour who saw the action unfold said: "It was really unusual. It was making a noise, it would have been distressed but at least it wasn’t injured.

"They had to bring a horse box down as the fire engine couldn’t get down the road.

"Everybody came out to have a look.”

Carole Kirkbride, who lives on Staups Lane, where the incident happened said this was not the first time cows had ended up in residents back gardens.

She said: “As similar thing happened to us a few years again where a number of cows had escaped the field by jumping over the fence.

"One came up the steps onto our patio and was banging its head against the window as it wanted to come in.

"I called the police and they managed to herd it out through the back gardens and into the pub car park as cows can go upstairs but can’t get down again.”

Who would have thought being a cow would be so risky?
