More than 1,100 illegal vapes seized by Trading Standards from two Nottingham shops

More than 1,100 illegal vapes have been seized by Nottingham City Council's Trading Standards team from two shops in just a week. The devices were confiscated on visits to two shops located in Radford and Hyson Green.

A total of 815 illegal vapes were seized in one go by Trading Standards from the Radford shop last week, although the exact date and location of the store have not been revealed. On August 29, the authority also seized more than 300 devices from a shop in Hyson Green.

Some of the vapes had a tank size of 30ml, 15 times over the legal 2ml limit, which is the equivalent of approximately 600 puffs. In a post shared on X (previously Twitter) on September 6, Trading Standards said: "Nottingham City Trading Standards seized 815 illegal vapes from a shop in Radford.

"Do you sell vapes? Make sure you know the law. Vapes with a tank size over 2ml (approx. 600 puffs) are illegal and must not be sold."

A post made on August 30 by the authority also reads: "Yesterday, we seized over 300 illegal vapes from a shop in Hyson Green. Some of the vapes had a tank size of 30ml - that's 15 times the legal limit.

"Know of a shop selling illegal vapes? Report it to Trading Standards through the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133."

Trading Standards officials said that almost 8,000 illegal vapes had been seized so far this year. It's unclear if anyone's been arrested in connection with each incident.

E-Liquids and UK disposable vapes can contain no more than 20mg/ml (2 per cent) of nicotine by law. Vape kits and disposables have a volume limit on tank or pod size of 2ml of E-Liquid - which usually equals up to 600 puffs depending on the usage.

Nottingham City Council's Trading Standards team seized more than 7,500 illegal vapes in 2023, compared to 1,786 in the year prior.
