More than 34,000 Covid cases and 167 deaths in latest daily figures

A further 34,526 Covid cases have been recorded and 167 more people have died within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test, the latest daily figures show.

The figures compare with 37,960 infections and 40 fatalities reported on Monday, while 31,564 cases and 203 deaths were announced this time last week.

It brings the UK total number of deaths in the Government’s offical figures to 136,375.

Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have been 161,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

Meanwhile Government data up to September 27 shows that of the 93,565,474 Covid jabs given in the UK, 48,765,726 were first doses, a rise of 24,919 on the previous day.

Some 44,799,748 were second doses, an increase of 33,177.

It comes as Boris Johnson met with a group representing families who have lost loved ones to Covid more than a year after he promised to do so.

The prime minister held a private meeting with members of the 4,000-strong group Bereaved Families for Justice at Downing Street on Tuesday.
