More than 60 animals were seized by police from an animal rescue centre after ‘multiple complaints’ were made. Some 34 dogs, 19 puppies, a cat, five kittens and five tortoises were surrendered by the CAARS (Carers Anonymous Animal Refuge Sanctuary) Rescue Centre in Red Lane, Essington, Wolverhampton.

Staffordshire Police executed a warrant on Tuesday, November 19, along an environmental health team, the RSPCA and dog handlers. It followed complaints of alleged illegalities relating to animal welfare and licensing. The animals were surrendered under animal welfare legislation and were being looked after at other locations across the region.

South Staffordshire Council is leading on the investigation, which is ongoing. CAARS bills itself as a ‘pro-life’ pet sanctuary.

Coun Rita Heseltine, from the council, said: "We take reports of animal welfare concerns very seriously. I want to thank members of the public for coming forward with their concerns.

“We are committed to investigating issues related to licensing and animal welfare fully and taking action where necessary to protect animals.”

A spokesperson for the RSPCA said: "This operation demonstrates the importance of partnership working. We are so grateful to people who report suspected animal suffering and urge anyone with concerns about the welfare of an animal to report them to the relevant authorities.”

Sgt Craig Beardsley said: “We’re determined to continue working with our local partners in Staffordshire to tackle the issues affecting rural communities the most. Only by working together can we continue to take action against those causing alarm and distress amongst local residents and businesses in our county.”
