More members of Amitabh Bachchan's family test positive for coronavirus after Bollywood superstar hospitalised

Several members of Amitabh Bachchan's family have tested positive for coronavirus after the Bollywood superstar was diagnosed with the disease .

The 77-year-old actor said on Saturday that he was in hospital being treated for the virus and urged anyone who he had been in contact with over the last 10 days to get tested.

His 44-year-old actor son Abhishek Bachchan also confirmed in a tweet on Saturday that he had also tested positive for Covid-19 and was in hospital.

Abhishek's wife Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, 46, also an Indian film star who starred in Bride and Prejudice, has also now tested positive for the virus, alongside her eight-year-old daughter Aaradhya, according to Maharashtra state health minister Rajesh Tope.

The pair are asymptomatic, according to local officials. Several other members of their Mumbai household have also been tested for the virus.

Vishwas Mote, assistant municipal commissioner of a western part of Mumbai, said: “All four bungalows of Bachchan family named Jalsa, Janak, Pratiksha and Vatsa have been sealed and declared as containment zone," local media reported.

"We are conducting contact tracing among all staff members, and till now 30 have been identified as high risk contacts.”

Suresh Kakani, another local official, said: "Total 16 people from the Bachchan family have been tested including guards and maids. Other reports will come tomorrow.

”Aishwarya and Aaradhya are both asymptomatic, [the Mumbai city council] will taken written declaration from them if they want to take treatment at home. Or else, they will also be shifted to hospital,” added Kakani.

Amitabh Bachchan is a household name in India and has previously been named among the highest paid actors in the world on Forbes’ rich list.

He has acted in more than 200 Indian films over the past five decades. He is also a former politician and a television host.

In 2015, he was present for the official unveiling of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Parliament Square alongside then-Prime Minister David Cameron.

The Bachchans are often called Bollywood’s first family. His wife, Jaya, is also an actress and a one-time member of Parliament.

India is currently in the midst of a sharp rise in coronavirus cases. Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Pune and Bangalore are among the Indian cities worst hit by coronavirus.

On Saturday the country reported a new daily high of 27,114 cases. Meanwhile, a partial lockdown has been imposed in several high-risk areas.
