More 'monkey business' at Blair Drummond as park welcomes third new arrival of year

Visitors to Blair Drummond Safari Park will be able to enjoy more monkey business after the park announced the birth of baby macaque Harris.

Harris is the third macaque monkey to be born at the park this year and is the offspring of first-time mum Laguea, who has been exceptionally protective of her little one - keeping him tucked in close to ensure his safety and comfort through the early days.

The birth took place on July 27 and despite his mother’s close attentions, Harris has appeared keen to explore and the surroundings of the world around him.

Team leader Carolyn Booth shared her excitement, saying: “We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome Harris to our macaque family.

“Laguea is doing a fantastic job as a first-time mum, and it’s been heartwarming to watch their bond grow.

“Harris is already showing a lot of curiosity and personality, and we’re looking forward to seeing him explore and interact with his fellow macaques.”

Anyone visiting the Stirlingshire attraction should be able to spot Harris - as well as earlier macaque babies Hayley and Harper - at the park’s drive-through macaque reserve, offering a glimpse as they navigate their habitat and the social dynamics of macaque society.

The new arrival is a particularly important one for conservation as Barbary macaques of the type that Harris is are endangered due to habitat loss in their native Atlas Mountains and also due to the growing illegal pet trade.

The park have invited anyone making a visit over the coming weeks to come along and see the new arrival and his family.
