More Sherlock is "even longer" than two years away
It turns out that Andrew Scott's recent prediction that more Sherlock is "a couple of years" away was a bit optimistic.
The BBC One series is currently on an extended hiatus as its stars Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch focus on their budding movie careers and writers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss work on a Dracula series.
And yet there was hope when Andrew Scott claimed on The One Show last month that there'd potentially be another Sherlock series in 2019. We should have known better than to trust Moriarty.
Scott's prediction of "a couple of years" between series was recently put to Mark Gatiss, who sadly told The Radio Times: "Oh, even longer I would say."
"We have no immediate plans," the Sherlock co-showrunner continued, adding later: "I think in a few years' time [if] we came back and said, 'Shall we do another one?' I think everyone would be very happy to. So never say never."
Earlier this month, Gatiss admitted that the idea of giving up Sherlock entirely is sometimes appealing.
"It was very, very hard to schedule the last series, because of Martin [Freeman] and Benedict [Cumberbatch]'s availability. And Steve [Moffat]'s and mine," he explained.
"There is always that Fawlty Towers principle of, 'Let's just leave it'. We've had the keys to Baker Street for a while, but one of the wonderful things is that they're always shared. They were shared while we were making it.
"There's nothing wrong with saying, 'That was our version, somebody out there go and do their version'."
Luckily, his partner-in-crime Steven Moffat was more optimistic in a recent interview when he acknowledged that he'd always "assumed" Sherlock would return at some point in the future.
