Pundit Alan Hutton has questioned whether Tottenham Hotspur “need” Morgan Gibbs-White as the north London club are listed as favourites to sign the Nottingham Forest ace.

Gibbs-White has no shortage of admirers ahead of the summer transfer window opening on Friday. Spurs are among the clubs reported to have an eye on him.

The Reds are well aware of the 24-year-old’s value, though. And they also know he would be incredibly difficult to replace, so will want to hang on to him.

Nevertheless, SkyBet have Tottenham as 4/1 to sign Gibbs-White before September 3, 2024. Former Spurs defender and ex-Forest loanee Hutton is an admirer of the attacker but doesn’t know whether he would provide back-up for James Maddison, particularly given it would take a significant sum for the Reds to even consider letting him go.

He told Tottenham news of Gibbs-White: “He’s another player who has had an outstanding season at a club where you thought they would be fighting towards the bottom and they did. But he always looked like that go-to guy, like Jack Grealish was at Villa, where we looked to him like go and do something that’s going to get us out of this hole we’re in, and he was him.

“He stood up to the plate and again he will be looking to take his career forward, and I think that is probably about right for him at this moment in time. It’s just whether Tottenham need a player in that position at the moment.

“I know he likes to play in that number 10 role where you get the best out of him because he can see a pass or score a goal. When James Maddison was injured Spurs did miss that bit of creativity within there. So if they can get another player in there and build for the future, it makes that squad stronger.”

SkyBet have Manchester United as 5/1 to sign Gibb-White, Newcastle United at 6/1, Aston Villa at 14/1 and Chelsea at 16/1. West Ham United are listed at 20/1 to sign him, Crystal Palace at 25/1 and Brighton and Hove Albion at 33/1.
