Moria Refugees Transferred to New Camp on Lesbos Following Fires

Refugees from the destroyed Moria camp were moved on September 18 to Kara Tepe, a new camp on the Greek island of Lesbos, after being displaced following fires earlier this month.

Fires first broke out at the Moria camp on the night of September 8 to 9. Around 12,500 people were without shelter and basic supplies after the camp was destroyed.

Thousands of the displaced migrants marched to Mytilene, the capital of Lesbos, to demand European intervention, with many sleeping on the roadside overnight on September 9.

Police began the operation to resettle the displaced migrants early on Thursday morning. However, there have already been reports of “squalid and uninhabitable” conditions in the new camp, according to Al Jazeera.

Refugees underwent health checks before entering the camp. According to local reports, 174 people with coronavirus were identified and isolated on Friday. Credit: Ruben Wagensberg via Storyful
